Indie Photography

Photography – Minneapolis

My photographic work is an attempt to reveal hidden, unseen, or overlooked elements and patterns in the natural world. Specializing in long-exposure and impressionistic photography, these techniques are used to transform a scene and present a unique perspective by revealing the contextual elements that often are at the fringes of awareness. Through long-exposure photography, my goal is to capture natural movement in ways that reveal new textures, shapes, and colors, which can transform a landscape entirely. Each photograph in the impressionistic series is a blended composite of 20 to 34 images of an object from various distances and angles, which creates a juxtaposition between the stillness and passage of time and reveals the context in which the object exists. This process results in a somewhat ambiguous artistic medium at the intersection of photography, sketching, and painting. Regardless of the technique, process, and medium, I aspire to evoke curiosity and awe through my photography and to afford people opportunities to think about, engage with, and perceive their surroundings in new and often powerful ways. A large majority of the photography I do requires the use of at least one neutral density filter, commonly referred to as an ND filter, which reduces the amount of light that enters the lens. This reduction of light allows me to manipulate camera settings in order to capture an altered depth of field and/or motion blur, which would otherwise be overexposed or too subtle to achieve the desired result.   The name Indie Photography is a play on words (Indie sounds like ND) and was developed to pay homage to the ND filters I rely upon so heavily. The Indie Photography logo depicts the way in which ND filters are used to reveal hidden elements in a scene by revealing the hidden meaning behind the adjacent letters 'n' and 'd' in the word Indie.
