Visual Art – Minneapolis

I make abstract fluid art (also known as acrylic pouring) by combining fluid acrylic paint and other mediums, pigment reactions created by different layering and application techniques, form random and unique manifestations to interpretation by the individual viewer(s) which is also called pareidolia. An obsession with a circular form led me to choose vinyl records as a substrate; the balance symmetry and wholeness gives me a feeling of safeness within which to work. The varying viscosities of the liquid media are strategically poured, giving me some aspect of control over something that is by nature uncontrollable. By manipulating the state of the ingredients along with the layering and application, it determines a reaction with one another and the visual outcome of the final piece. Through trial and error, I’ve learned that every piece won’t always turn out. I’ve also learned that giving myself a limited amount of time to work can help me so I don’t fall into the habit overworking and dissecting every piece, which has the tendency to disrupt the integrity and purpose of the piece. I continue exploring this technique because it has created a tangible positive change within myself both mentally and physically. I feel like everyday has a purpose now. I can’t wait to do another piece day after day. It’s like I’m obsessed with it. It's forced me to look and see the buried potential that I’ve always had. It has truly been a stepping stone in my life. “The comfort zone is a psychological state in which one feels familiar, safe, at ease, and secure. You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone.” — Roy T. Bennett
